What laws are in place to protect developers when consumers offer their product online for free?

For example,

A team of programmers makes a great app for mobile devices. This app becomes quite popular, but after a while, the team notices that someone put it online for people to download for free. Are the programmers protected by laws?

NOTE: This is not limited to the US, are there any international laws etc that can protect the developers?

    It's copyright law, just like music, movies, etc. Generally speaking, you need to sue the person violating the copyright in their home country.
