Vegetarian but craving meat (chicken)?

I am a vegetarian, and have been for one and a half years approximately. Before that I was vegan for a year and I plan to switch to a vegan diet again later on this year when I go to university.

However, I have been having a little trouble with my diet lately. I find I have been craving meat - not red meat, I had my iron checked and it was fine - but meat such as chicken.

I don't want to ignore my body's signals, and if I was seriously missing something vital I might even consider trying to eat a tiny bit of meat again.

I'm not sure if these are genuine cravings, or if it's just a 'psychological' craving...

I don't know what to do! :D

I really really don't want to eat meat, but of course I would give it a go if I am damaging my health....

Anyways, any advice, help, or suggestions are greatly appreciated :) thank you!

Sometimes when you crave meat, particularly when its something you wouldn't expect to crave then it means you need more protein. when I was vegan I craved eggs like crazy despite the fact that I was never really bothered about eggs and I could make some pretty convincing egg substitutes!

Just make sure you are getting plenty of protein and a good mix of protein. Vegetable sources of protein aren't complete proteins so you need to get a variety of pulses and grains. Eggs and dairy are complete proteins but maybe you want to get into good habits if you plan on going vegan again.

So check out some of the meat alternatives that offer "chicken".

Who knows why we crave things. Sometimes it is because of a missing nutrient but many times its just that you crave something you haven't had in a while.

    Think about this.

I bet there are certain vegetarian dishes you also sometimes crave so thats what you prepare for your meal that night. Normal, right? So is craving chicken. It just happens to be a food you no longer eat.

This also happens to folks who are on strict diets like diabetic or renal diets which can be brutally restrictive.

Find something that sooths those cravings. Fake chicken might do it. Or something that has the texture of meat might do it too.

It's not vegan (at least in the UK) but you could try quorn products and try and 'manage that craving' - I am 100% sure that the craving is "psychological" and if you are eating sensibly your health will be fine - incidently as proof that a vegan diet is absolutely right for a human body look up Fiona Oakes - last year she broke three marathon world records and holds the marathon course record at the North Pole and in Antarctica - she is 47 and has been vegan 40 years !

Please don't go back to eating meat after you've got this far. As for the craving, try some of the Quorn products - yes these are not vegan but as you say you are now vegetarian then these would be fine. They do chicken style cold slices or for frozen stuff try their chicken style fillets- these have a similar taste and texture to eating chicken but are completely meat free. Good luck with it babe. x

  • It could very well be a psychological craving and not a "I'm lacking nutrients" craving. Fortunately, there are tons of analogues out there, if you aren't opposed to those. Since I live in the U.S. and you are across the pond, I don't know what you have available there, but your local grocery should have options for you.

Your an omnivore what do you expect, it's like people who choose to be abstinent.

Repressing natural behaviour takes a lot of effort not just at the start but for life.

It's your choice to be vegan against natural behaviour, now you have to tell yourself again why your veg/vegan. ( please don't say animal reasons, them clearly you don't understand what it takes to produce food)

You either eat meat or you don't, vegan is NOT a religion and its JUST a diet nothing more. What people add to it is up to them but again it's not a religion.

Your body is just craving protein - have some nuts, grains, chickpeas, lentils, egg, greek yoghurt etc. You don't need the meat, just some protein :)

You are not damaging your health; but honestly, I think your body is just craving protein. Eat more lentils, nuts, and beans. Don't kill a chicken just because you crave it. I would consider you a dishonorable vegetarian, if you did this!

Psychological addiction is all it is. Eat some Gardein products. Their mock chicken is so close to regular chicken!

I'm eating chicken and collard greens right now with country gravy. Made it all myself. It's soooo good.
