This is a "Brain" teaser. You are on a boat, but not a ship.?

Question

The Captain and Navigator have been working for days to reach your destination.    Yet no one has ever reached the location before by boat.   Only a few of the crew are allowed on deck to check out the view,  but it is a historic moment.

After a brief time the Captain orders up a new course, but the navigator points out that there is only one direction he can go.   First question is why?   Then do you know the Name of the boat.   And it's exact location, Lat./Lon. ?   Extra points if you know the Captains name.

Captain Hyman G. Rickover, the "boat USS nautilus, first to reach north pole it a submarine so only a few people on deck at once. the only direction from the north pole is south.
