Books by black authors?
For school this month I have to read a book by a black author which is at least 150 pages and is not poetry.
The only problem is that since I love reading I have trouble forcing myself to read a book I cannot relate to.
I recently read "Monster" about a 16 year old black boy who has been accused of assisting with a robbery that left the store owner dead. I thought the writing style of putting it into a movie script was brilliant but I hated the story line. How much more stereotypical can you get?
I hated Huck Finn when we read it in school, I can't deal with dialect like that.
So what books should I try? I'm currently struggling through "The Bluest Eye" but I don't think this one will cut it either.

this man is truly amazing!!!
gift of fire/on the head of a pin--these are 2 short novels in one binding. don't know if either is 150 pages, but if not, surely your teacher would let you read and report on either or both.
always outnumbered, always outgunned (1st of a trilogy. you get the honor of meeting socrates fortlow. he is what i would want a man to be. i fell in love. :)
the last days of ptolemy grey--(so far, my favorite. would have fallen in love with him if i wasn't already in love with socrates. :)
i've read at least a half dozen of his many novels, and was disappointed only once, 'killing johnny fry' his delve into novels of the sexual genre.
i love his writings so much, i've --purchased-- about 15. a first for me for any author.
i recommend the first i listed. i believe it will 'wet your appetite' to read more by him.
it certainly did mine.

'The Song Of Solomon' a brilliant book by the wise and gifted Toni Morrison.
Its so sad though that people are compelled to read an author by his colour not talent. The 'educational' system has a lot to answer for.

Maybe Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
