Why does every country have immigration laws?

Please help me solve this mystery! Why does the U.S., and every country for that matter, have strict immigration laws? Why does BIRTH have to dictate where somebody has to get citizenship and reside? Even then, strict immigration laws don't stop people from immigrating illegally! Wouldn't it be easier for every country to just open the borders for everyone?

I would love to be German/European (I'm American) but can't because of very strict EU immigration laws! I would have to have a very rare skill that can't be found within the EU or have a German wife! In a world with no immigration laws, I would just enter Germany (since I know German) and swap my US passport for a German one.

Instead of dealing with the hassle and enforcement of immigration laws (and hence, no more worries about illegal immigrants - there's also illegal immigration in Europe and Latin America, NOT just the U.S.!), wouldn't the world be better if every country just opened the borders for everyone? (I know, I know, then everybody in the world who works for their country's Customs and Immigration agency (or equivalent thereof) would be out of a job, but that's beside the point).

Please help me solve this mystery! Perhaps someone or someone you know who works for Customs and Immigration could help shed some light!

It is simple. It is because it is not just one or two or a few hundred that want to move here or there. It is the millions that want to move one place and the over 1,000,000,000 that want to move any where.

You want to move to Germany for this or that reason. The scenery ,a job a certain lifestyle.

A million from the Philippines would go tomorrow just for a roof over their head. A million from Syria just to get away from the bombs

There are millions of refugees around the world. Of course you do not mind if they all start coming to your town. They can set up tents on your street. They will work for a few cents just need some food.

The local business man will like the cheap labor. No need for those building codes they can erect a shanty town in the local park. using democracy and their vote I guess they can make new rules too.

You want to swap your passport for some other one not a big deal. Now how many will you let swap their passport for one in your town. One a hundred, a thousand or unlimited?

The world has changed greatly in the last generation on the ability of many to just up and move.

In your parents time only a few could actually afford to move and the problems were not as big an issue but there have always been issues with immigration. Ask the local Indians what they think of the hundreds of years of immigration to their lands. A farmer whose land is swallowed up by the city.

A fisherman that has no fish left in his fishing area.

It is not just country to country you can have an immigration issue. You have had it state to state as well.

How about the truly desperate should they get to move first. They really do not care about the view or language, they just want to survive and do something for their children.

I still believe in the power of the human brain. Most people would just dismiss you as an ignorant person, but I think you are just a bit slow.

Here's how you can answer your own question: Imagine you live in a nice, yet not too large, midtown home in a beautiful neighborhood, as I do. Your fridge is stacked with yummy foods, and you have DirecTV and some cool cars in the garage. Hey . . . that's me!

Now imagine you open your door and spread the word that anybody who wants to can stay with you. Within a week or two, you will have 40 people living in your house. The toilet will be clogged quickly, so they'll pee and poop in your yard. Your fridge will be empty, and every time you want to drive one of your cars, they'll be gone.

There is about 1 billion with a "B" people who want to move to the United States, and since we admit a pubic hair more than 1 million per year, that comes down to 1 out of 1,000. The US population is currently 312,8 million, so it would quadruple within a year or two.

I don't know how many people would want to move to Germany (I worked hard for years to get the hell out of there), but it will be many millions. If Germany had no immigration laws, not only people who would want to be productive would move there, but a lot of people who would want to enjoy its amazing safety net. That's not in Germany's interest, and the German citizens would not want to compete with foreigners either. So no government would get votes if they were proposing such a thing.

countries as entities aren't that stupid. They wouldn't go to the hassle of coming up and enforcing immigration laws if they don't think they would not need them in order to protect their resources and their citizens from competition.

You may as well ask yourself why you do have a lock at your house door. Wouldn't it be better if everybody who is cold could come into your house and have a nice cup of tea and live there with you? Maybe the person who comes does all the cleaning and cooking for you and you'll love to have them around, but maybe the person would just take your stuff and throw you out of your house. So you really want to have some choice of whom you let into your house. Countries also feel the same about whom they let into their country. Somebody who is going to work hard and pay taxes, probably yes. Somebody who needs public assistance, probably not.

And birth dictates a lot, whether your parents have brown or black hair, whether they are rich or poor, whether they have a heritable disease, whether they care about you or not will all influence you immensely. Of course it's not fair, but fairness is concept which doesn't have to do much with biology.

A nice idea on principal but not plausible. Overnight the western world would be swamped by people from the 3rd world and poorer nations and dragged down to that level. Look at the EU freedom of movement laws meaning that the western European nations have been flooded with eastern europeans as they are richer countries and multiply the effect of that by about a trillion. In terms of jobs, housing, healthcare etc many western nations are struggling with what they already have. Disease will spread and cultural clashes when borders are opened would be catastrophic. There are a million reasons. There is no mystery, the opposite actually.

First world countries would be swamped with people with no education or work skills. Where would everyone work? Get enough food an water for everyone? Where would they live?

Do you leave the front door of your home unlocked and let everyone that wants to live there come in and stay?

Right now, only part of the world is 3rd world.

If every country just opened their borders for everyone, the entire worl be one 3rd world country.
