Which do you recommend, a finder scope or a telrad?

I have an orion dob xt8 and have been having some trouble finding thinks through the red dot finder that it comes with. I have heard that either a telrad or a finder scope such as the 9x50 right angle finder that orion offers are both very helpful. Which would you recommend as the most helpful in moderately light polluted sky's? Also how would I mount them on my telescope without removing the red dot finder already in place, or do I have to remove it?

The Orion red dot finder is a Telrad type finder. It's only problem (in my opinion) is that the dot is too bright and can't be dimmed enough.

I doubt a Telrad would fit the red dot holder, although I suppose it is possible it might. You can have more than one finder. Mounting another would require either sticking a holder to the tube with double sided tape or glue, or drilling holes in the tube to take mounting bolts.

You can pretty much do what ever you like. At one time I had a right angle finder, straight through finder, and a guide scope all mounted on the same telescope. There are still some extra mounting holes in the tube!

Actually a lot of people use both, especially on the larger Dobsonians. A Telrad or your existing red dot finder will get you in the neighborhood, whereas a 9x50 optical finder is often enough to reveal the brighter deep space objects. The real benefit of the Telrad over your existing finder is those concentric rings spaced at 1/2, 4, and 4 degrees. That can bequite helpful if you know the location of your target with repect to a visible field star.

The Orion red dot finder and the Telrad are both reflector sights, so not much difference between them.

A reflector sight is just a beam splitter that bounces an image (a red dot or a reticle with rings) at your eye. So they do not magnify and they do not gather light to help see dimmer guide stars or help you spot dimmer objects. So you need a 50mm finder as well, it gathers light so dim objects will show up.

So you need the reflector sight for a wide angle sight AND a finder scope so you can see dimmer objects or the dim stars in the field that will guide you to a dim object. So keep the red dot and mount the finder near it.

In high light pollution, a finder scope's magnification and light collecting area allow you to spot more stars. As i live in a high light pollution area (think inner city, Polaris is near the naked eye limit), i use a 9x50 finder scope most of the time.

I've used red dot and traditional telrads. They work well from dark sky sites. Remember to turn down the brightness of the dot as much as you can. Even a red light can ruin your night vision if it's bright enough.

Absolutely. That is precisely how I use my Telrad in concert with my 9x50 finder. There are times when I use a laser finder as well, but that can be annoying to others if I am observing in a group, as is frequently the case. The Telrad is well worth the investment. I usually make my own charts that provide star hopping info using the Telrad circles superimposed on the target regions of interest. This is very helpful, not to mention enjoyable. The free download software "Cartes du Ciel" is very useful in this effort.

I use both on my Dob, it came w/ a "red-dot" type rifle scope, (sort of like a telrad). The red dot is fine for finding something bright like the Moon or a planet, but for fainter objects the conventional finder is much better.
