Why cant workers take left over hot food home instead of throwing it out?

My gf works at a gas station and at the end of the night any hot food not sold has to be thrown away. Why wont they let her take it home? We do take it home some times first throw it in a new garbage can then when take the trash out back she leaves the 1 bag next to the dumpster for me to take home. Normally just a couple hot dogs and 1 burger.

So why wont they let her take what is garbage home instead of it going to waste? Same with expired things like milk and other things are still good after the sell buy date but she cant take them home free I don't see why not.

Update:

I get how some people would make more so they can take more home but her rules are strict and only let 1 of each hot thing be in at a time like 1 burger 1 hot dog 1 pizza so impossible for her to make extra especially since the boss is always coming in.

Cathi's exactly right. When I was in high school i worked at Baker's Square and sporadically they would let us take old pies home but we kids would purposely sell the newer pies so the ones we wanted would be available when our shift was done.

It doesn't take long for that to seriously affect food costs so management stopped that.

Most business owners do not allow employees to take the unsold hot food home at the end of the day due to health rules and regulations that govern food sales. You would have to know the laws in your area governing businesses similar to where your gf works. If a business violates the health codes, they can be shut down and denied a sellers certificate in order to reopen.

Another big reason is that many people would abuse the situation, such as making extra items that they know would not sell before closing in order to take it home as unsold.

I know that this may seem wasteful in some ways but business owners are trying to protect themselves and trying not to waste money at the same time.

Your girlfriend should not be taking items out of her place of employment in clean trash bags for you to pick up, that is theft and she could end up being fired over it, I doubt that a few hot dogs and a burger would be worth her losing her job over.

Some food related businesses are actually able to donate some food items to local food pantries and food kitchens so that people who are struggling to eat can get food that they need. This can be items that are near their sell by date.

The boss has every right to come into the business at any time, it is his business after all.

Have a good day and Happy New Year.

They abuse the system. While your GF might be a nice and honest person, some people would put on an extra burger at the end of the night just to be able to take it home for free.

In some food service jobs, you are required to catalogue all expired food and only a supervisor can dispose of it.

If she worked in a small "mom and pop" shop; I bet they wouldn't have any issues, as long as she is honest. However, for some reason, people don't feel bad stealing from big faceless corporations.

I ALWAYS put the rubbish in the bin. At least the table is clear for the next customers if it is busy and the cleaners can't get there in time to wipe it clean. The cleaners are there to make sure the tables and chairs are wiped down and clean and tidy but they shouldn't have to clear away your rubbish as well. You don't leave dirty plates on your table at home so why do that outside? Are you so lazy that you can't pick up and put away you own rubbish? It is a good habit to have. (When I say "you" I mean collective "you"' not YOU the asker)

Because it gets abused. When it is allowed to take home food employees start making more food than needed so they can take it home. I used to work in restaurants and I have seen it happen.

your boss does not under stand the concept of inventory control

    and JIT IC systems.

    I can guide her

She is afraid of employee not dealing fairly with the food.

bring your "sales pitch" here so YA people can discuss

it with you, then take the best to her.

YOU are asking to take her resources..........she should

at least give her "to be tossed out food" to a homeless

    shelter.....
