Italian grammar of verb essere?
I am proud of my Italian heritage and would like to get a tattoo of an Italian phrase. Being a big commitment, I would like the grammar to be correct! The quote in english is 'The essence of being' 'being' as in the Italian verb 'essere' (to be, existence). I know a fair share of conjugations however it is an irregular verb and is tricky. This being said, what is the correct conjugation and translation of the phrase?

The first answer is gramatically correct, but for some reason I would rather say "l'essenza dell'essere".
It's just a different nuance but I think it sounds better.
Just so you know, "essere" has got a double meaning in italian: being like to be and being like human being. I think this leaves the sentence open for personal interpretation, which makes it all the more intriguing.
Anyway it's really up to you, just pick the one you like best.

You use the infinitive for the verb. You do not need to conjugate it at all.
"Being" would be translated using the whole infinitive.
