Simple cross-platform chat program (PC/Tablet)?

Looking for a simple chat program for my family to use. They're not all tech savvy so even something as simple as skype can be over whelming.

I was hoping to use a program like Kik on PC, but I can't find a version for windows OS.

Do you know of any FREE and easy to use programs where people can contact one another from a tablet to a PC? Since not everyone has both, but one or the other.

Ideas I have in mind so far if I can't find something simple enough:

    Spreecast and Vokle come to mind. Even Tinychat with a password protected room could work.
