Core or arm strength in gymnastics?

hi, I am a girl and have a question.

If you just do Floor and tumbling in gymnastics and not Bars, is it enough to have good abs (20 hanging leg raises) but no arm strength? I am not allowed to work on pull ups and push ups, because I always get an elbow tendonitis.

where in gymnastics is arm strength needed? in Bars and press handstands from a straddle? anything Else?

of Course i do have a quite Good Overall Fitness, I can do 35 push ups, but i can't train it to often and I can't do pull ups or Chin ups!

so can you be a quite good acrobat without tremendous arm strength?

I had a male co-worker who was an avid gymnast in his younger (and thinner) days. He told me gymnastics is all about balance. He said if you can keep your body's center of gravity and posture where it should be, you can be graceful without using tremendous strength. He convinced me of the importance of balance in each apparatus for men.

I know only about half the apparatuses are the same between men & women, but it seems to me his principle still holds. You need a strong core to make discreet mid-air adjustments so you can stick landings on the floor. That's a skill needed in almost every apparatus, so you may as well learn that one cold.

BTW, as a runner who's suffered his share of injuries, follow the advice on your elbow. Don't push it and be totally honest when they ask you how it feels and what you've done.

    Best of luck!

I am an acrobat. Core strength is the best though you will also need upper body strength too
