What is the point of passing gun laws if criminals refuse to obey them?

What is the point of any laws if criminals won't obey them? Local gun laws don't help much because criminals have cars. And nobody has proposed a law that would make people turn in their guns, just stricter background checks.

It keeps people like you and I from buying guns, in the future the criminals will be the only ones with guns. Other than the police and the supreme court recently ruled they don't have to protect you.

The same could be said of any law. Enforcement of all our laws, traffic, fraud, theft, immigration, and any other is spotty at best.

But it is a natural reaction to prohibit things that cause problems. It seems simple, logical and it is politically popular.

It is much more difficult to get at the root of the problems, and solve them. And it is difficult to justify money for education or jobs programs or large sophisticated police intelligence divisions, where you might not see any results for several decades.

So we can define their behavior as criminal and prosecute them for hurting others. It's kind of like speed limit laws, which don't actually stop people from speeding but allow the police to go after and stop the speeders.
