What benefits do motorcycles offer over a car?
I used to ride bikes a lot when I was young, (bicycles) but stopped at around age 13. So I know how two wheeled vehicles handle to a certain extent. (I've sat on a motorbike before, WAY heavier than a bicycle though)
I want to know what benefits a motorcycle might offer me compared to a car. I did a little reading up, and found out that:
1: They aren't really much more fuel effecient than cars at all
2: The odds of getting killed/severely injured is way higher than with cars.
I had an aunt die in a crash when she was younger, and my family has told me to flat out avoid motorcycles, but considering I'll be done with school soon and likely moving to live alone while studying, I was wondering if a motorcycle would be a worthy investment to save money.
I'm naive on this topic for sure, but I don't really feel like the hassle of a car is for me. But then again, maybe It's for the best I try to get a car..
If anyone has any insight on my situation or can answer based on having owned a motorcycle / tried the same thing, that would be great.

Motorcycles have some pretty good benefits. It's a extremely fun and free way to transport, whether just cruising around, to commuting. It all depends on the bike as far as fuel efficiency. I just got my first bike and I get 90 mpg vs the 25mpg I had with my car. I drive everyday about 10 miles, so I am saving quite a bit in gas. Now with insurance, motorcycle insurance is really inexpensive, when I had my bmw I was paying 150 a month and now I'm paying roughly 35 a month. The savings add up! Lastly, you get through traffic a lot quicker, you don't quite have to worry about some situations in traffic as you do in a car. Here's a benefit you probably haven't thought of, but safety! Experienced riders or at least knowledgeable riders who constantly practice safe riding techniques will always have the edge over a car, 1 you're a smaller target, which makes you harder to hit, 2 you don't have any distractions, it's just you and the road whilst cars have radio, cell phones, cigarettes, eating, make-up, etc. 3 Maneuverability, a motorcycle will be able to out maneuver a car, in a turn, in speed, in pretty much everything. It can be used to your advantage, so use it, but dont abuse it!
As far as what's not beneficial. Danger, yes motorcycles are dangerous, but at the end of the day it depends on the rider. In my personal opinion it's safer for the reasons I just stated above if you constantly practice safe riding techniques. If you DO get in a accident with another motor vehicle, the chances of serious injury are very high, it's not a joke, a motorcycle can be a death machine, so be safe! Next, weather, it sucks, but rain is tolerable if you buy the proper rain gear. Lastly transportation is crappy, it's difficult to transport things, so you need a backpack, cargo bags, etc.
In my state you must take the BRC (Basic Rider's Course) before getting your license. After completing the course, I have to say, it probably will save my life, it taught me so much and I'm 100% better than I was before it. TAKE IT it's worth every penny. Motorcycles are amazing, get one and you will not regret it. Also, start out on a 250cc motorcycle, they're smaller, but you'll save yourself a lot of headache and possibly road rash.

Actually, some of your research is flawed. Depending on the bike, you can get much better fuel economy than a car. My Dad's Harley gets 65 to 70 miles per gallon. So if that's a factor, then you just need to choose the bike carefully.
As for saving money, that depends on what kind of vehicles, and what the insurance situation is like where you live.
The primary advantage of a motorcycle is the riding experience itself. It is an amazing feeling. As a practical replacement for a car, I'm not sure it's a great idea. While you can pit a surprising amount in the saddle bags on my bike, you are limited for things like shopping. You can only have one passenger.
As much as I love motorcycles, I have to suggest you get a decent used car first. Get the bike when you are finished school.
And don't let the family talk you out of it. People die in car accidents too, but for some reason they still think it's okay to buy those.

Generally cheaper then a car in the long run.
Journeys can be made quicker.
Parking is alot easier.
Gives the rider a sense of freedom, alot more fun.
Generally you will get more MPG (Depends on what bike and how you ride it).
Loads more, but that's all I can think of from the top of my head. A car is perhaps a better everyday vehicle, more practical, especially if you have alot of bad weather. Saying this, I ride a motorcycle almost daily and have no problems. It's just a pain when it rains.

It really depends. Saving money isn't the point of having your own transport, but anyway, as i'm sure you know, a bike is cheaper.
As far as fuel goes my bike does about 16 mile per litre. My insurance is £30 a month. Basic maintenance (changing oil, plugs, brakes etc) is easy enough and doesn't require any extra equipment (you get a little bag of spanners etc with a bike).
As to the weight, well you'd expect them to be heavier than something without an engine. Once you get moving all that weight helps with your stability.
Worst injury i've had off a bike was some bruising when somebody knocked me off. Injuries sustained in car wrecks is all limbs, collar bones, every rib, neck, and back in 3 places.

cheaper up front cost
quicker to zip around when commuting
easier to find parking
IMHO, less to maintain/repair and easier
smaller engine bikes do consume less fuel than average cars
Chicks seem to dig bikes, but I personally hate passengers and never needed the motorcycle approach to 'get' chicks.
