What use is an I-Pad?

I have a PC and a laptop. My daughter gave me an I-Pad for Christmas. It does nothing, it seems, that I cannot do easier on my PC. I also have a cell phone full of useless gizmos that I never use except to make calls when no landline is at hand. What am I missing, if anything?

There is nothing that you are missing. PC's are definately more convenient for doing just about any task. iPads are more useful for traveling. These days, tablets are fusing with laptops, but if you are just going to play games, a tablet is better for travel because there aren't a lot of buttons, but for business, definately a laptop is better lol.

I would have no use for an I-Pad. I have a desk-top computer and a dated mobile 'phone. Friends pour scorn on my very aged mobile which is on pay-as-you-go. I use it only if I absolutely need to make a call or send a text whilst away from home. It's handy to keep in my jacket pocket in case someone wishes to contact me after having had no response from my house 'phone.

Friends who have all these modern (and very expensive) gadgets seem to think that they are doing me a favour by pointing out how many free minutes they get and how many thousands of texts they can send for no additional cost than their rental (which sounds astronomical to me). They'll send texts for no real purpose 'just because they can' and they think that's great.

I am far more pleased to be able to say that my mobile phone never runs up a bill, needs no monthly payment, just a small top up as needed.which, for me, means five pounds about 3 times year !! My house-phone is what I use to make 'real' calls and my rent includes those calls if I hang up before 1 hour's talk time. When I, eventually, have to buy a new mobile 'phone (which I hope will not be for a long time) I will still want it on pay-as-you-go and will use it just as frugally as I use my present one (which is more than a decade old).

Well, Ipads are useful for finding something out quickly. They tend to be faster than most laptops.

You can get apps for ebay, amazon and other retailers. With a paypal app already on it, transactions can be a lot faster and easier. The Ipad is also good for games too, there are even apps for scrabble. You'd be surprised at how many family favorite games are on the apple store.

Also, you can add and set reminders, calendar dates and do your personal banking on the Ipad. You can catch up on tv and download videos onto it, to watch on the go without internet access.

But if you still don't see the point, you could always send it my way!

That's a really good question. I was thinking about getting one but at the same time realised that it's pointless in my circumstances. Smart phone and PC is enough to me.

There is so much that you can do on an iPad, that you'd never even realise if you didn't spend a bit of time exploring the App Store and everything on it. I spend so much longer on my iPad than I do on my computer if I'm honest. Why don't you ask your daughter, if she bought it for you, she'll probably be able to recommend some apps that you'd like. :)
