Do you have to cover a bird cage at night?

So I always thought that you had to cover a bird cage at night so that the bird would go to sleep. Recently my family purchased a parrotlet and we do not cover the cage, he just goes to bed when it gets dark. We bought him at a bird place (not Petco or Petsmart. A place that only sells birds and bird supplies) and they told us that you don't have to cover a bird cage. Although, if you start covering a bird cage at night, you can't stop doing it because you will stress the bird out. I just wanted to know for sure if you do or don't have to cover a bird cage.

No you do not have to cover a bird cage at night.

If the bird is not used to it putting a cover over could freak the bird out or at least disturb it.

Covers need to be dust free, and it is hard to use a night light so that the bird can see what is going on.And Tiels at least are prone to Night Frights.

If the bird is in the same room as you and you are up late and there is a lot of movement then it may be best to partially cover.

I have 8 birds uncaged that sleep where they like and they are not in darkness until I go to bed late.

Sometimes they will even sleep in fairly lighted places as well.

They take their selves to bed at dusk and get up after dawn.

I have a Cockatiel who came in today and is not covered and she is doing all right. The owner said she gets covered every night. But as two of my birds have settled on her cage I could not put her cover on without moving them off. And I never disturb my birds once they settle for the night.

My friend has two parakeets and she covers her bird cage at night.
