Info about Marina Zeas in Piraeus?
I'm flying to Athens in 10 days, I'll have to spend a number of hours in Piraeus waiting for my ferry and I've been told I could enjoy some nice coffee and food in Marina Zeas. Is it a good place? How do I get there from Piraeus underground station/ferry gates?
Any particular bar or restaurant you would recommend? I wouldn't mind spending the hottest time of the day in some hair conditioning. A good service, kind staff and clean place are also appreciated.
@Airpole, the metro website says they've got a storage area at Piraeus station. Thank you for giving me the hint, I had already pictured myself crawling around with my huge luggage under the anvil of the sun :-)
@CMV thank you very much for your contribution, you wrote a lot of useful info but I think Airpole was more to the point. I've been to Piraeus several times and I just needed to know how to get to the Marina :-)

In Zea there are many restaurants, bars, cafes and what have you. The problem is that you will most likely carry luggage around with you and you will be limited in moving around.
Although it is not far away from the port it is a considerable distance away from the ferries. If you will be going there you have to consider the luggage problem.
Also you do not specify which island you will be going to as the docks for each destination are far apart and those going to Crete are the furthest of them all.
From the underground station, which in Piraeus in in the surface, you walk to the exit opposite the platforms and you take the overflying bridge to the docks.
Alternatively, if you go the left from that exit there are several restaurants and fast food joints where you can spend some time but not a prolonged stay.
Not sure if there is left luggage department on the station but if there is one leave your luggage there and then walk to the left again following the curve of the road to the second main intersection. When you will pass the tall building on your left and between the two churches follow the road up the hill all the way to the top and over the other side go down the slope. At the main intersection about 5-6 blocks down go to your right and 2 blocks away is Zea.

Hello you responded to my question about the phrase "The essence of being"... Anyways thank you for the response! Wasnt sure where else to contact you. Is the phrase "L'essenza dell'essere" grammatically correct? What is the actual translation in english? Would an italian native think it sounds correct and just open-ended?

Having walked this before ( to visit the Naval Museum there at marina Zas ) I can tell you it takes around half an hour to stroll there from the Pireaus Underground station .
A better plan might be to dump your bags in the left luggage pen in the big cafeteria / passenger waiting lounge which is in the ground floor , far side , of the big ( and very obvious ) central building / Ticket office block situated in the middle of Great Harbour, which is the harbour where all the ferries go from .
You can also sit in there as long as you like , and you dont have to buy food and drinks from the cafe in there , it is a public waiting room .
Beware that although the Cafeteria is open all hours , the left luggage closes early in the evening , get your bags out again in good time ! (opening hours are posted on the cage ) .
Or , as you are coming from the airport , take the underground train down to Monastiraki , change trains to go on downhill to Pireaus port as you have to there , but go up and out into Monastiraki square , where there are lots of cafes , eateries , and stalls selling fruit and so on . Depends how much baggage you have weighed yourself down with .
Tickets for the boats are sold from booths near the boats , which are manned about 2 hours before sailing time , as well as at all times by the Agents in the central ticket block .
The Ferries usually leave on the dot ! -- dont be late !
I'd leave yourself an hour and a half before the boat sailing time to be at Pireaus port , it's a big place .
Most ferries have a big board above the stern loading and boarding ramps facing the quay showing destination and sailing time .
If you have google earth find it on that , get your head around the geography and look at pics people have posted on there to familiarise yourself .
An excellent guide book to ALL the islands and ALL the ferries , to everywhere , is Frewin Poffley " Greek Island Hopping " very well worth buying , and there is zero B S in it , tells you EXACTLY like it is .
Best damn guidebook to Greece I know , HUGE amount of good info about almost everywhere in it .
His Online website to back that up is Greekislandhopping.com , I have just been on there and I saw the complete timetable for all sailings from Pireaus . The book has a map of Great Harbour , of Pireaus , of Athens , all the transfer info airport to port , everything . It even shows you which ferries sail from whereabouts in the port .
