Is Fabian sometimes used as a girls' name?
I ask because I recently returned from Haiti and while there I bonded really well with the children in the orphanage we worked in. The girl I grew closest to was named Fabian (or perhaps Fabien, which is the French version). I know this is typically a boy's name, so I wonder how often it is used for girls, in what country, or perhaps I heard wrong and there is a similar name used more often for girls? I want to name a character Fabian in honor to her so I'd love to know.

Perhaps in other countries it's used on a girl. You witnessed that. I have only seen it on a boy in the US. I think if you use it for a character you should spell it Fabien or Fabienne.

Fabian is a masculine name, but that doesn't stop people giving boys name to girls.

Her name was probably Fabienne. Which is a girls name.
Fabian is not given to girls.

Maybe it was Fabienne? There's also Fabiana which is a female version of the name so you could use that to honor her if you want.

It may be traditionally a boys name, however I know plenty of girls that are called Billie, which one would normally see as being a boys name. I honestly think it would be gorgeous for a girl's name.
