Cruiserweight Showdown: James Toney vs Dwight Muhammad Qawi? Who wins?

Toney really distinguished himself at cruiser weights by beating the tough and difficult Vasilli Jirov. He also made some impression at heavyweights by manhandling John Ruiz, Hashim Rahman and Evander Holyfield though the two were already far from their best prime and ageing. He would meet his match against the prime Samuel Peters who beat him twice on points.

On the other hand, Qawi dominated the light heavyweights in the early 80s until he ran into rising star Michael Spinks in 1983 and redeemed himself by winning the cruiserweight crown in 1985 but lost it a year later to another rising star Evander Holyfield by split decision. He would lose in a rematch by TKO to Holyfield. Qawi also had mixed results at heavyweights, losing by KO to the comebacking George Foreman but held wins over the likes of Leon Spinks, Everett Martin and Olian Alexander.

At just a shade over 5-5, Qawi would definitely have problems against the 5-10 Toney who is not only taller but quicker and more skilled while being as tough.

The venerable Angelo Dundee once said that Toney was among the best, most talented fighter he had ever trained. What Toney lacked was dedication to keep himself in shape.

I favor Toney to beat Qawi by easy 10 round UD.
