Will my budgie get lonely?

I am a first time bird owner and I thought that a parakeet/budgie would be a good bird to start with.

So I wanted to tell you that the reason I'm asking this question is because I don't want my budgie to get lonely.

Anyways, I'm 14 and I do go to school, so that is already some time I would have to be away from my bird. Other than that I would spend time with my bird the rest of the day when I'm not in school. The only other time I wouldn't be with my bird is because my parents are divorced and I live with my Mom and I go to my Dad's house every other weekend. I just wanted to know if my bird would get lonely without me for two days, because I know that budgies are very social birds. So any other time than when I'm in school and when I'm at my Dad's, I will be spending time with my bird. Is that okay?

A good question. From what I understand, your budgie is in good hands so far. They can get lonely but if what you're saying about being away for two days is correct, your little guy will be okay.

My own has been a single budgie for a good seven to eight years of his life. I rather think he prefers it that way. Especially by now, as they can get very territorial after some time about their space, haha. And I've had to work some long hours and even the opportunity to run on out a night or two. I've returned and my guy as been nothing but chipper!

Just make sure he has enough food and water, some toys and he should be plenty fine =)

That's 8 hours during the day you won't be spending with your bird, another 8 at night. Let's say an hour a day for homework and other things, an hour for food. That means 18 hours of the day you are not spending with the bird. Which means you can only devote less than 1/4 of your time to this bird. That is not factoring in that on the weekend, when you can spend time with him, you may or may not even be there. For all that time, there is no one to talk to, to help him scratch his head, to play with. Time does not work such that if you don't pay attention to him one day, you can make it up the next day. For at least ten years you are trying to commit to replacing the attention a bird gets in a flock that has 30 members by yourself; if not only worried about the here and now, think about when you go to college in a few years. Yes, he will get lonely.

Many people find that they thought their bird was happy but the quality of life greatly improved after getting it a friend. I really recommend getting a friend for your budgie.
