Tips for a first time parakeet owner please?
I'm 14 and I have had hamsters in the past that I have taken care of myself, but I have
never owned a bird before. I think that starting out with a parakeet is a good choice. I would really appreciate all of the information I could get about owning a parakeet. Such as: the best food for it, the best cage, everything I need to do as far as cleaning, and playing/bonding with my bird. All the tips I could get would be very helpful! Thanks! :)

The best food for your parakeets are vegetables. I would give mine carrots a lot. I also give them seeds for breeding parakeets. Wild Harvest is the brand if you want to know. Water from the faucet is ok I believe since I give them there water from there,
Best cage. The best cages are the ones wit a lot of space. They are birds they need to fly to get exercise. My dad and I made a 3 ft W 9ft Length and 5ft height so my parakeets have there exercise. It cost us 100$ to make. In stores I see cages that are 4ft height and like 2 ft wide and 3 ft long that are 150$ which is enough. If you have 1 parakeet tame it and your house can be its cage. Buy a 1 x 1 x1 cage that should be enough for 1 parakeet.
Cleaning. For cleaning parakeets. Cages are the only ones to clean. They poop a lot so cleaning the bottom of the cage with water everyday can avoid huge messes. But obviously if you only have 1 clean it every another day. Your parakeet will leave the shells of seeds on top of their food so as soon as they fly there will be a mess.
Playing/Bonding. Tame your parakeet by spending as much time as you can with it. If its a male its going to be easier, if its a female its going to be a little bit harder. Put your hand in the cage for 5 minutes and talk with your parakeet it will get him/her a chance to get use to your hand.
Others: Don't put your parakeet in cold temperatures. Below 65 degrees Fahrenheit its not that safe for it. They are cold blooded and they are tropical birds. Don't put it near air vents since it will blow on the parakeet which is bad for its health. DON'T feed your parakeet avocado, onions, alcohol (duh) and seeds from fruit they are very dangerous!!!!!!!
If one of your family members smoke just don't buy a parakeet at all. In your case get him away from the smoker (if anyone smokes)
Buy him toys/make toys for him/her or else they will live a boring life so entertain it.
Buy another parakeet if you won't spend as much time with it or if gets to lonely in your house.

Umm I think it would be a better idea if u would search YouTube or google there is a lot of info there and about the food I give my birds completely natural seeds. People usually give thier birds a diet mix . But the truth is that it has a lot if colours in it (fake coloured food I mean artificial colourings ) it can give your birds an upset stomach .
About cleaning the bird cage first of all the more birds you get the dirtier the cage will be so be aware of the poop monster :) I clean my bird cage after every three days since I have 4 birds I also clean thier water bottles after three days . And about bonding with your bird just stay in touch with your bird talk to it get it used to u of course the more birds the more distractions I suggest u to get two parakeets if you don't have enough time to spend with your bird they are flock birds and if you keep a flock bird alone then it could depress the bird and stress it out. if you are buying one bird it must have enough space to fly around and enough space to store its toys in parakeets are very moody so be sure to give them a variety of toys. The more birds the bigger cage. If you want your bird to have fun then give it daily exercise out of the cage and make sure that the room you chose to leave your birds must be bird-safe I mean no windows , covered mirrors, and no electrical wires I don't recommend to chose a bathroom as a good room . A play gym would be an entertaining thing to the birds make sure to give them treats when you taming them I like to use parsley , millet and carrots.
