If this is a package deal, it's reasonable.

If i were putting such a thing together, i'd drop the Moon filter. Get a variable polarizing filter instead. The Moon is way brighter when full than at other phases, due to a retroreflector effect on the surface. I've used a 10% filter for Venus, but could use a variable filter instead.

If i recall, the xt8 comes with a 25 mm plossl eyepiece. IMO, you should also have a 10 mm (that ships with the xt8i), even with a 2x barlow. This is higher priority than a Moon filter, if you have to choose.

I picked up an xt10i as a beginner. The computer has taught me where stuff is. I've since shown up at public star party events without a battery (or even without the computer), and was able to find a bright galaxy, bright globular cluster, bright open cluster, bright nebulae, and bright double stars without it (and without a sky chart). But the computer rapidly showed me how futile it is to look for galaxies from my light polluted home. An oxygen 3 filter shows nebulae even from high light pollution locations. A padded case has protected the instrument, especially the little screws on the focuser.

One rule is to try eyepieces and stuff before you buy it, if at all possible. A local club can help you out here. I've got a 5.1 mm eyepiece that works poorly for me, but everyone else seems to like. No idea why that is.

Yes, I have one of those. It's a good balance between cost and aperture. No auto guidance means you'll have to find your way around by yourself, which is a good thing and part of the challenge, in my opinion. You might want to stick a 1x red dot finder on it. I used one from a BB gun, but you can buy them from Orion also. I upgraded to a 90° 9x50 finder also, which I like better than the stock finder, but maybe they've improved that. I think it's a 2" focuser now, that's a good step up also.

It's refreshing for someone to come asking about a decent scope, instead of some 2" department store piece of crap that so often comes this way.

You could do a lot worse than this. Go for it.

I started off with the same set up and I still use it quite often. It's a very good starting point.

Yup. Very good choice. I have two of this size and configuration. Will keep you busy skygazing for years, maybe a lifetime.
