Why do women wear makeup and men don't?

I've never understood why a woman would deprive herself of sleep by adding an extra hour of daily prep just for vanity or to please others, I certainly wouldn't follow suit.

A bad idea widely accepted is still just a bad idea.

Men wear makeup on TV, in movies, and for theater performances. Most men don't wear makeup in regular life.

I think it is because men pay more attention to looks. Men can be old and ugly and still get attractive women if they're rich, powerful, or charming. Just look at some of the high profile men who get reasonably attractive girls. Silvio Berlusconni (sp?), Donald Trump, Hugh Hefner, Lil Wayne, and so on. All of those guys would probably be considered not-so-good-looking from a physical perspective, but since they're rich/famous/powerful they get attractive women.

Red lips aren't seen as attractive in men, so lipstick would be out. Same goes for nail polish (except for less flashy colors like black, white, and gray, which some "alternative" guys do wear).

Foundation doesn't even look good on most women, so unless a man is using it to cover up a sunburn or something, I wouldn't like that.

Eyeliner or mascara could be nice because it would bring attention to his eyes and lashes.

But overall, most makeup highlights "feminine" features, so it's not too surprising that men don't wear it.

So you're telling me you want men to start wearing makeup??? Women are already comaplaining enough about there not being enough masculine men in the world today as it is and men wearing make-up will only add to that IMO.

They like to compete with other females - that's why they have beauty pageants (note that these women are not trying to attract a mate, they are trying to win a contest).

It's easy to blame men, but ultimately women do it because of vanity.

Feminists would of course disagree, but they are usually wrong.

Beauty is something that is naturally an instinct in women or female species. To attract a mate or a man they need something to draw attention hence make up . Men dont need it becoz there are other factors they use to attract women like Confidence, social status and protective nature.

Because women spend their entire lives hearing the message that "you'd look so much better if you...."
