My budgie is biting down his toe nails... how much is enough?
My budgie, less than a year old....
His toenails has been growing and they got pretty long, so I was thinking about taking him to an experienced avian handler/vet to get them trimmed. Today, I saw him chewing off his toenails but I've always heard about parrots and parakeets chewing off their toes and freaked out a little. He left two of the toenails pretty long but al of the other ones are nicely trimmed. LOL. He doesn't seem to pick at them anymore but they look petty close to the veins in his nails...
Is it okay to let them trim down their own toenails or should I do something about his behavior? Please help!! I don't want to wake up to find his toes gone!!!!
Also, my budgie is in a god condition, preens himself a lot throughout the days, likes to take short walks outside with me and is a good sport.

Try to get him some Sanded Perch Covers. they keep nails trim, and should stop your bird from trimming his own nails. they are available at most pet stores and are around five dollars for a pack of six, which is a lot cheaper than taking the bird to the vet or an avian specialist. also they should last a lot longer, as they sand the birds nails as he moves around on the perch. ps. don't worry, they don't hurt his feet. i have some for my parakeet and have never had to get his nails clipped. :)
