Pronunciation of species regional differences or simply dated?

Hello everyone,

once again, I ask about English pronunciation. The term in question today is "species". When I think back to my English teacher, he told us to pronounce species with a middle sound similar to the German "sch" for everyone who knows how that sounds. For everyone else, here's a link to an online dictionary: http://www.dict.cc/?s=species

If you click on that link and listen to the English pronunciation of species, there are three speakers there. Nachteule and AngloAndi (British and Canadian) say it differently to Artist (American). I was told to pronouce it quite similar to Artist's way, a little less American winy maybe.

Anyway, I listen to a lot of discussions online and the great majority, American, Australian, British, Irish or whatever people I hear do not pronounce it like that. Most pronounce it like Nachteule and AngloAndi in my given example. Also my English teacher was very fond of British pronunciation, so I struggle to believe that he actually just went out of his way to teach us one single American word. Could have been a mistake on his side, but anyway, is species like Artist said it, somehow dated or just found in specific regions?

Update:

Dammit, wrong section. Well, maybe you can answer it anyway.

It does not matter so much in Britain any more as we are so used to hearing it pronounced both ways. I did grow up pronouncing it speeschiz.

Spee - shees or Spee - shiz.

    Either is fine.

It`s an English word and so it should be pronounced the English way.

(If I hear another American say `glayshur` instead of glacier I am going to scream)

    In English, it's pronounced spee-shizz

    In American, it's pronounced spee-sees.

Two nations divided by a common language.

I'm American and I don't pronounce it with the "sch", I pronounce it like it has an "s" in it.
