Is it okay not to have a cage for my budgie?
I found Romi my budgie in a parking lot two weeks ago and I bought food, treats, toys for him, but cages that were big enough for him were 50~100 dollars which I cannot afford right at this moment.
His wings were clipped so he was probably someone's pet but I've been putting up fliers for the past two weeks and no one claimed him yet.
I spend literally ALL my days with Romi. He didn't like me at all when I rescued him from under a car. I brought him home and he flew away from me (as far as clipped wings could take him which wasn't very far). I moved VERY slowly and talked softly to him and within 2~3 days he was very used to my presence and other people.
He is now pretty tame and is already target trained and somewhat toilet trained. He is a very smart bird... He likes to watch shows with me and sit on my keyboard. He likes to sleep with me, too etc... I know it's not safe, but he goes outside with me, too. He hasn't tried to fly away or run from me yet. I take him to this field where it's a huge grass area with no cars, dogs, cats, or people or trees. I like to let him "attempt" to fly and then back to my hand.
For the past two weeks, I've been looking up things about budgies like 6 hours a day since I found Romi... and I know a cage for Romi would be a better choice since he will have a designated safe place...
Would you recommend that I get a cage for him? Is it urgent that I need a cage for him or can I save up my money a little bit for a month longer so I can get him a nicer one? (And also my living expenses... T_T)
But I still haven't bought him a nice cage, yet. The only cage I can afford is like $30, which is too small... way too small... it can only fit a couple of perches which make it seem like it's already overcrowding and you can only stick a tiny little food/water bowl and like maybe one toy...

For your birds safety it must have a cage. Since you found someone's pet bird w clipped wings in a parking lot it should be obvious they can get away, out of their owners control. So far you have been lucky, incredibly lucky. I'm not sure if you are aware, but the clipped feathers will grow back & the bird will fly away. Taking him out is just asking to lose him. Again, he escaped from some other careless owner, that's why you have him. The feathers will grow back at different times, one new feather an d the bird may be able to fly when you least expect. Hopefully you will consider leaving the bird inside since he sounds like a lovely pet as well as a survivor. He deserves a safe, secure environment. Look for used cages, put an "in search of" sign up in the grocery store for a used cage. Have you looked at the local Lost & Found listings in your newspaper? Someone may be looking for their bird. Hope you'll rethink the way you are keeping this bird.
