Why does my budgie shave everything to tiny little pieces before eating?

First - carrots are high in salt. They are not a good choice for very small birds. If the birds wants to eat some that if fine, but, you dont want to leave it with just carrots. Salt causes the bird to retain water (water always follows salt) and this makes it harder for the heart to move the extra fluid in the blood. The result - is high blood pressure.

Next - birds do not have teeth. They can either eat sand or small gravel and this will grind the Food in the gizzard - or - if they dont have access to sand or grit they have to cut it up into tiny pieces like yours did. If you want your bird to eat this - it needs access to sand or tiny gravel......

Last - you should never let the bird get hungry. They burn off allot of callories easily. Our birds - small parrots - each has three food dishes - two that are full of a seed mixture and one with fresh veggies and fruits. They get fresh veggies and fruit pieces every morning - even if they just play with it - they still get vitamins and minerals from it. Birds need to eat 6-10 hours per day of the 12 hours they are awake........ just to hold them over the 12 hours they are asleep. Always keep food in the cage.

You do not give fruit or veg.instead of seed.Seed must be available at all times,fruit or veg.is an addition to the diet.

It is normal for budgies to shred things.
