Fixing Remington 870 Express Rust Issue?

I have a 20 gauge Remington 870 and went turkey hunting a while back when it was raining. I don't have rust issues like some people have, but I forgot to take the barrel off the gun and dry where the barrel goes into the receiver and it rusted. I don't care to get it parkerized or the whole thing blued, but do you think the gun bluing from the store will cover up the rust spot? Or any other suggestions? I don't really use it to hunt anymore besides going to the range and having fun because I'm older and have upgraded, but really do want to do something quick and easy (if possible) to cover up that rust. Thanks!

unless you have some deep pitting....

try some copper or brass wool and oil. 0000 steel wool will work if you cant find copper or brass.

oil the area and gently rub the 'wool. It should take the rust and leave the finish if you go gently

Well You got what you got once the damage is done.

The cool thing about Remington 870s and 1100s is that it is very simple when you get in from a rainy day to get every last drop of water out of those two guns. Pull the barrel off, remove the trigger group, release the bolt carrier and drop it out, slide the slide off the mag tube. Now I take a paper towel and wipe all the water out. Especially at the rear portion of the receiver back wear the stock bolt is.

Once dry wipe inside and outside down with oil, then reassemble, wiping the parts with more oil as you go. Takes about 20 minutes while you sipping your coffee and drying out.

A tip here : When out in the rain keep the muzzle downward to avoid rain running down the inside of the barrel, and tilt the gun as you carry it so that the ejection port is also downward. Now, you will get less water inside your gun. :)

Tip 2 : Remington 1100s when first introduced had a nasty problem splitting the wood forehand piece. It was learned that when out in rain with the 1100 reach up and release one click off the barrel nut. Problem solved. Remington did begin in later production start laying a piece of fiberglass in the area of the forehand grip that always split. That helped too, but, I would always still release a little pressure on the wood when wet. OK ?

Edit : oops under the barrel nut you can remove the round clip that retains the magazine spring. CAREFUL the spring is loaded. Sorry, a poor term in the discussion, the spring is squeezed and will spring out the tube if you are not careful. Like one of those snake in a can pranks. Now you can get the water inside the Mag. tube also.

Well, the solution to the 870 rust problem is, obviously, to be diligent with your maintenance and never put it away wet after it's been "rode hard".

The rust spot is PROBABLY just surface rust. See if you can knock the rust off entirely with some 0000 steel wool with a bit of penetrating oil (like WD40).

Once it has rusted it will be more likely to rust in that spot again. Keep a close eye on it. If you oxpho blue, it will provide some meager protection from rust but it isn't very different from diligently keeping it oiled.

Good prep is the key. Steel wool to remove all the rust and clean it with denatured alcohol or 90% Isopropyl alcohol before bluing it. It won't be a professional job unless they took a serious upgrade in quality oer the past years, but where the problem is, it probably won't matter much.

Buy a small bottle of oxphoblue from brownells. Just remove the rust, then use fine steel wool to rub in the blueing. Works good for patching.
