Math: figuring out how to turn 8.5''x11'' stretched to 22''x28''?

I'm using a 8.5'' x 11'' photo

I will be creating a grid to draw this image onto a canvas that is 22'' x 28''

I'm awful at math and can't figure this out unless it was as a simple as a 5x5 image on a 10x10 canvas because then I'd just double the inches of my grid for a perfect stretch.

Update:

oh yeah.. can you explain what you did to figure it out so I don't have to run into this issue again in the future?

I answered this question earlier but you said the canvas size was 20x24 that is why i recommended a scale factor of 2.

but in this case since you are using a canvas of 22x28 then i recommend a scale factor of 2.5.

that means the 1-inch distance between grids will become 2.5 inches.

    why 2.5?

    here is my reasoning

if your original photo is 8.5x11 and you scale it up by a factor of 2.5 the resulting image size would be 21.25 x 27.5 so the image will still fit in the canvass leaving a little space for the margins.

if you are going to scale it up by a factor of 3 the resulting image size would be 25.5x33, then the image would be larger than the canvas.

so if you decide to scale up images. select an appropriate scale factor and just multiply both dimensions by the scale factor. if the resulting scaled up image size is larger than the canvas then try a lower scale factor.

    Multiply 85 times 40% Go ahead and put the big number on top 85 times 40% 5 over 0 =0 8 times 0= 0 next line carry down 0 then 4 times 5 = 20 bring down 0 carry the 2 (of the 20) over the 8 times 4 =32 add the 2 carried over 32 + 2 = 34

Well an 8.5x11 is whats called an A-sized piece of paper, then what you do is put the second number (11) into the first spot (11x__) then take the first number (8.5) and double it and put it into the 2nd spot (11x17) and thats a B sized. 17x22 is C sized and 22x34 id D sized. So unless you pick one of these sized, i think It would lead to a bit of distortion. Im not really sure what exactly you are asking but i hope this helps!

In order to enlarge 11 to 28 ( the longer side), you have to multiply 11 by (28/11) = 2.55

If there is NOT to be any distortion of the photo, the other side have to be 8.5 x 2.55 = 21.67, which is not exactly equal to 22. So there will be a slight distortion.

On this side, the multiplication factor = 22/8.5 = 2.59

So if you have 1" by 1" grid on the original photo, the enlargement will need a gris of 2.55" by 2.59" grid.
