What do grits taste like?

For southern grits to be grits, that have to treated in alkali. Are grits only white corn? I wonder if they taste like a Mexican corn tortilla because in Mexico, they also treat their corn in alkali. It is the only way to make corn nutritionally available. I live in California. All I can find is canned hominy, and degermed cornmeal, I don't think I'm getting a proper grits experience

    Hominy is corn soaked in lye to remove the yellow shell. Hominy is ground to make grits. It really doesn't have much of a flavor, it's usually served with butter or cheese.

    You might find instant grits in the hot cereal section of a large supermarket.

    Find a restaurant that serve it and ask them what they use.
