How would you decipher between God's gentle nudges and your own emotion?

I've failed miserably... I was a Follower of Christ through and through, and then I fell back into a bad habit in a weak moment. My sin only got worse and worse. Now, I've been regretting it more than usual. I want to throw myself at the nearest altar and beg for forgiveness. But I know He won't take me back. I hear people say things like, "I was evil, and I didn't think I could be forgiven." And after a laundry list of their crimes, I always have to say that what I've done is way, way worse...

Is there a chance this deep regret could be God trying to nudge me in the right direction? Or is it nothing more than my regret and fear trying to kill me?

No matter what you do or where you have been on your journey through life, God still loves you. He wants to forgive you just ask.

There is something we studied in church a while back about how God uses the unlikely to fulfill His purposes. Paul used to go around killing Christians openly massacering God's people. Moses had just fled Egypt for killing a man. God used a harlot to save scouts when God's people were taking the promised land. David ignored the fact that his son raped his sister and his brother had to avenge his sister's death instead of David. Also David committed adultery then tried to kill the woman's husband when she ended up pregnant. Jesus's birth: Joseph who is a poor and scandalize carpenter, Mary who is a young and scandalized girl, Shepherds who are a bunch of untrustworthy characters. Only the Magi have credibility in society, but this diminishes in Jewish culture since these men were Gentiles. The most important event in the history of the world and God chooses people who are rejected and wouldn’t be believed by society!

I hope that this proves that even the the christians from the Bible made mistakes and He forgave them and He will forgive you too. It is God speaking to you not your fear and regrets trying to kill you.

It's your own guilt, regret, and fear. God doesn't exist, so you don't have to worry about the eternal fires of hell. However, depending on what you've done, you may still need forgiveness if you have hurt someone else, but not from an omnipotent being. You need forgiveness from whomever you have hurt. The human brain and subconscious is powerful, and that's all it is. It is not some God trying to tell you something. However, I must stress again that this does not make your actions acceptable. You don't need a god to know the difference between right and wrong.

Ok, God does not nudge you. He gives you choices and it is up to you to make a right choice and as we offend do make a bad choice. Now when we make a bad choice Gods not going to punish you he would rather let you learn from the mistake and hope that if your smart enough you wont make that choice again. Your punishing yourself in hopes that you will earn a brownie point with God. But the fact is he is over it as you waddle in it!

What kind of God leaves you in such a lurch? If He's listening to you, why not alert you with more than just a gentle nudge?

There are no gods, this isn't the dark ages any more you know so there's no good reason to still believe those bronze age myths today
