What does an EMS worker do when injured on duty?

I'm an author, writing a scene and need an answer:

What happens when an EMS worker is injured while on duty?

Specifics: Characters are attacked while trying to get lunch, EMT's wrist is sprained (although they can't tell if it's sprained or broken for certain), but he refuses to go to the hospital (extenuating personal circumstances). His paramedic partner agrees (when he promises to follow up with his doctor and splint it in the meantime, in addition to full disclosure on why the attack happened), but obviously, he can't continue duties for the night. What happens next? They are ALS in California (Bay Area).

Feel free to include consequences for his decisions, etc. Details are welcome.

Update:

Doesn't need to be exciting--just accurate! So, thank you :D That is exactly what I needed to know. It's the small background stuff that's really hard to find fast answers for and I really appreciate yours.

Under the circumstances described, I would call the on-duty supervisor and advise them that I was injured and booking off. The supervisor would contact the scheduling department who begin calling around to staff the car. I would also call my dispatch and advise that the car will me out of service until further notice. At some point, usually within 24 hours, I'll call the workplace injury line to file a formal injury report. My doctor will determine how long I will be off work and what my graduated return to work will look like. Supervisors will be notified as will scheduling to fill my spot until I'm all healed up.

    Really not that exciting.
