Bioinformatics or pharmacy?
Hello,
I posted this question on the German forum before but I'm not getting any answers there, so I hope to get help from my American friends.
I'm about to study on a university and now I have the choice between bioinformatics or a course in pharmacy that is specialized on research (I don't know how it is in the States but in Germany, one needs a special certificate to have a drugstore and I won't get that certificate if I'll study this course. I will have my Bachelor's and Master's degree instead. But as I'm planning to work in research, I don't even need it. I only might be less attractive to an employer)
When looking at what will be taught, I think bioinformatics is more interesting to me, as I already have good knowledge on informatics from school and working with computers is one of my hobbies.
But I imagine a bioinformatician to work on the PC all day and transfer research results that scientists made and protein structures to the PC which sounds pretty boring to me.. while doing research on drugs sounds exiting to me.
Please correct me if it is wrong what I assume the jobs to be..
What I should add, is that I'm not really a genius in mathematics but I'm prepared to slash my way through.
I know that the situation in the States might differ from the one in Germany, but maybe someone can estimate how chances are to get employed and where I probably will have better salary. And maybe someone has more information on the jobs that I would be doing later as it is hard to find something on this on the internet.
Thanks

Actually, in bioinformatics (which I'm trying to get a masters in right now :P) is about working closely with scientists to come up with new technology and new software. It's not data entry but programming can become tedious in its own right. I mean, there's a reason it only costs a couple thousand dollars to sequence your genome today than the millions it did just a few years ago. Bioinformatics made that difference.

Bioinformatics is an up and coming field so if you can get past the boredom, I would suggest it. Your math does not have to be that great. Rather your logic, analyic, and diagnostic skills are more important for Computer Science related fields.
