What are the early stages of Alzheimer's?
My mum has been drinking a fair bit today so she is pretty drunk. Awhile ago her doctor said she may develope Alzheimer's at an early age but I can't remember why. Today one of my sisters childhood friends came up to visit. Let's call her Gracie. Gracie was sitting outside with my mum drinking with her and all of a sudden mum grabbed her hand and said who are you? Gracie said you know me, I'm Gracie. Mum replied how do I know you? Gracie said you've known me since I was a small child. I think mum said umm no. Me and my sister went out and made sure she knew who we are and she said I want to go home. We said you are home and took her to bed. I put her dog on the bed to sleep like always and she said why have I got him? It really scared me.
Please don't say call an ambulance because this is not an emergency. We are planning to confront her tomorrow when she's sober.
I don't know if this is because of the alcohol or not but it's scary. I shouldn't say this but mum drinks a lot and nothing like this has ever happened.
She has been to the doctors numerous times about this. She has had a few scans done on her brain and they found something on the scans that could lead to Alzheimer's down the track. She isn't even 50 yet.
Also my mum has alzheimers not dementia. They aren't the same really. I googled it. Thank you though.

Alzheimer's is a specific disease. If your mum is a severe alcoholic it's more likely that she'll develop Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome. If you're grandparents had alzhemier's then it's more likely she'll develop it.
Dementia is an umbrella term for many illness (over 130, including the 2 I've already mentioned) that are characterised by memory loss, then loss of other skills and abilities as the disease process progresses.
What your mum did with Gracie sounds very unusual and not like dementia. Don't confront her, if it was caused by dementia she won't remember it and it will confuse her. If it's because she was drunk she'll feel guilty.
