Why does Train mention Yom Kippur in the song "50 Ways to Say Goodbye"?

As far as I know, none of the guys in the band are Jewish. The song was written by Pat Monahan and two Norwegian guys.

    You have to be Jewish to mention Yom Kippur in a song?

    maybe they have Jewish friends or maybe they are just using it as poetic license or something

    Pat Monahan wrote this in the lyrics "How could you leave on Yom Kippur?" because he wanted to make it seem like it was a big deal that she left on a holiday (even though he doesn't celebrate it.) It's just a joke.

    Just read the lyrics

    It does seem to be important in the song

    D'you know that this Monahan is not Jewish?

    (or the Norwegians?)

    Maybe the girl was Jewish?

    There is no fan website where you can ask details about the band?

    ==========

    Found a rabinic sermon inspired by the song

    Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. Many people think of it as at one with G*D. The lyrics seem to imply that he thought they were one, and she left.

    Since it's a Day of Atonement, repentence, I think he meant, that she should have been forgiving him instead of LEAVING him. And naturally it was not to be taken seriously. It is a joke in the song. He has a lot of them in his songs.
