Catholics, is it true that-?

Is it true that it is considered a sin in Catholicism, to be superstitious?

If so, isn't that a bit ironic?

Update:

Faustina, I mean that it is impossible to be both catholic and not superstitious. The very fact you believe in god makes you superstitious. Catholicism itself is 100% superstition. The definition of superstition is believing in something for which there is no evidence. Therefore, if you are catholic, you are superstitious. There is no way around it.

By ironic I take it you mean that, since we Catholics use things like scapulars and medals and statues, we are superstitious?

First of all, yes, superstition is a sin. It means you believe in things like good luck charms, fortune-telling and the like. It's closely associated with witchcraft and the occult.

Our use of physical objects does not make us superstitious. Take a scapular, for instance. I wear a scapular because I believe in the Holy Mother's promise that "Whosoever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire". However, it is not the scapular itself that gives this grace, it is God's power working through it. God can work through physical objects. What about when Moses and the Israelites were dying of thirst in the desert and God created a fountain of water from a solid rock? It wasn't the rock that gave the water, it was the power of God working through it.

So no, it is not ironic for us Catholics to consider superstition a sin, because superstition is not part of our Faith. Does that mean a Catholic isn't capable of falling prey to superstition and believing in it? No, because we are just as capable of sin as anyone. But the fact that we use such objects as the scapular does not make us superstitious, because again, it isn't the object itself that gives grace, it is God working through it.

    God bless, hope I helped.

They don't see what they do as being superstitious. It's like an alcoholic claiming they only drink to be sociable.
