Liberals: Why don't you get on with your crusade for tolerance and condemn Mormophobia?

I am not a Mormon, and I do not accept many of their theological beliefs.

But lately I have seen vicious and unfounded attacks against Mormonism. For instance, people ignorantly suggest that money contributed to them is wasted. In reality, they take care of their own, and truly needy people in financial crisis do not have to run to the government. That is clearly a good thing.

Mormons have never bombed our cities, murdered our soldiers, or killed 3,000 innocent Americans. They do not practice "honor killings" of their children who stray from their faith. They do not behead "infidels." Radical muslims do these things, but in some quarters condemning them is labeled "islamophobia" by the same people who freely mock and disparage Mormons.

Maybe it's time to have mainline churches and civic groups hold seminars to promote an understanding and appreciation of Mormons. Perhaps schools should add to their curricula courses that teach about Mormonism in a very positive way.

Maybe we should coin a new term describing unacceptable thinking: Mormophobia.

Update:

EDIT: Saying that only Republicans attacked Mormonism during the primaries is ridiculous. The media is starting to attack Mormonism; and you should read some of the idiotic questions on Y!A.

@ Vern 86: What islamic radicals are doing is happening today, not 100 years ago. I assume you condemn them as well.

Update 2:

@ tre: And you say the same things about muslims, right?

I am a mormon teen, and I just want to say I appreciate the support against the bigotry against my church.

I'd like a little of our history to be taught in school-usually the church is only mentioned as settling utah. There is never anything about the Missouri Extermination Order or Haun's Mill Massacre. But then, it could be good for the basics of other religions to be taught as well.

Vern86: The Utah war was bloodless. The president heard rumors and sent soldiers to check things out. Turns out, nothing was happening against the government and the settlers were obeying the law. Brigham Young stepped down for the new govenor without a fight. It was basically a messup of bad communication, as far as I can tell. And as far as the Missouri goes, did you hear about the Extermination Order or Massacre I mentioned above? If people were killed, it was in self-defense. Plus, part of the reason missourians didn't like the chuch was because most were anti-slavery-most were from the North.

But seriously, too many people either twist our beliefs or make up stuff entirely. It's annoying and rude. Thanks for being open minded :)

"Mormons have never bombed our cities, murdered our soldiers, or killed 3,000 innocent Americans."

Yes, they have. You obviously don't know history. In the 1830s, they fought with MO militia (That's why they were isolated to Utah). And again in 1850s, they fought US soldiers when Brigham Young was their governor and wouldn't enforce US law. The US government sent in an appointed non-Mormon governor that would enforce US law. They killed several hundred US soldiers sent to enforce the order.

    I respectfully disagree.

In this day in age it would be internationally embarrassing to have a Mormon president. There is far too much religious zealotry in international politics today to even consider the notion. I do not condone anyone who deeply and personally believes in Native American Israelites, magic underwear, intergalactic polygamy, space-Jesus and so on... That is pure nonsense and it has no place in politics. At what point in time do we stop being polite?

Nobody is attacking the Mormon religion any more. That all ended when Newt Gingerich and Rick Santorum dropped out of the primary. The far right wing evangelicals are all for Romney now.

Squeeze the donuts out of your ears. It was Republicans who were the most critical of the Romneytron 3000's Mormonism, until he got the nomination. Then they said it was the Democrats and Liberals who were criticizing him. Perhaps we should coin a new term describing you and your ilk: Moronism.

    EDIT

I said Republicans were the most critical, which they were--not that they were the only ones criticizing. If nothing else, this election has certainly shown how good Conservatives are at misquoting.

The Mormon religion should be attacked. It is after all quite a demented view of the world and not worthy of respect or tolerance.
