how can you tell a male malawi from a female? some people say egg spots but i have also read females can have these aswell.. are there any obvious signs of males and females

The size of the fish mainly, but also if you see them spawning you'll see which one releases eggs. There is no way to tell by the shape of the fins or the size of the fins, etc, unless you want to take them to the vet to have surgery to see which sex they are internally.
