i just bought a basic starter tank for my son from pets at home, a 19 litre tank with filter included for £17. they also do a 24 litre tank with filter for £20.

the gravel costs about £4.50 per bag and you will only need one bag for this size tank.

if you want ornaments they are between £5 and £15 depending on size and design etc.

plastic plants vary from £3 to £15 (ish) per plant.

you will also need a water care kit for setting up the tank which is another £5 ish

however you will probably be told you shouldnt have coldwater goldfish in this size tank as they will grow too big for it. if you want to, you can buy a heater for about £10 and get some smaller, warm water fish that won't outgrow the tank.

the actual fish costs between £2 and £5 per fish

I accept as true with Catx, no aquatic or pet store of their right intellect would allow you to 'rent' a goldfish. Also no fish must be kept in bowls or used as ornament, goldfish can grow very colossal (upto 30cm/12") and produce an awfully gigantic quantity of waste. Edit: there is without doubt no change what so ever to the place you maintain the bowl, the fact is rather simple: goldfish must in no way be stored in bowls.

the actual fish itself isn't expensive, you need more than one, to keep one on its own would be cruel. but you need a tank (the bigger the better) and filter gravel etc. as a goldfish is a cold water fish you don't need a heater.it also all depends on where you are going to put it. do you have something to stand it on or will you need to buy a cupboard/stand

i would personally recommend at least a 3ft tank. and would suggest with filter.gravel, fish, plants. etc you're probably looking around £60 to £80 for a new one without a stand.try looking in your local free ads paper. you ll find complete set ups there for half the price.

Just a few pounds for the fish. They're worth less than their own food, usually, which I find offensive for the poor fish. I don't know how much it'll cost for the basic equipment, sorry.
