Why is the Toyota Avanza so popular?

Guys, seriously, I'm asking this again, cause last time I got only crap answers. I did not make this up, I'm not bashing, it's the truth. Just look at the official Toyota Indonesia website if u don't trust me! Please spread the word so Toyota becomes aware that people don't agree with this morally wrong practice! I am living in Indonesia now (originally from Germany) and I have always wondered one thing: Why is the Toyota Avanza so popular here? It is not cheap, not safe and looks ugly, I don't get it. It is locally produced, so unlike other cars no high import duties. Price is like 13500 to 14500$ and u don't even get ABS for that. No airbags, not to talk about ESC. WTH? It's 2012. And it's not reliable either. Test drove one once and after standing for 3 minutes with radio and position light on, the battery died on me. So anyone can solve this for me? Actually I think it's a scandal to sell such a bad, unsafe car in 2012 at this price point under a brand name known for safety!

Besides, it is so morally wrong. This car is targeted at families. It drives like a bathtub on wheels and has no safety features whatsoever. I have heard of several accidents with this car where all passengers died, whole families whiped out. How can u sell this car?? How can u go home and think "well today we did something great, sold another 1000 rolling death traps"
