In each group, do only two teams qualify? Also how many games do they play during the qualifying process?

It varies according to which part of the world you are referring to.
In Europe, there 53 teams split into eight groups of six and one of five. Each team plays the other teams in their group twice (home and away). The nine group winners qualify and then the eight best second placed teams are drawn into four pairs who play each other home and away with those four winners also qualifying.
