Property tax increase almost doubles mortgage, will probably cause me to lose house?
My taxes went up this year because the county where I live is bankrupt. This caused my $800 mortgage to increase to $1500 and as my younger sister recently moved in and gave birth to twins my other expenses have also gone up without any increase in income.
This seems wrong.
Is there anything I can do about this? Are there programs that can help? Please let me know about anything I can do to get my payment lowered or help defray the payment until I can sell the house.

There are no 'programs' which can assist. Your county is apparently facing HUGE losses of revenue compared to tax revenues. That your younger sister has moved in with twins is irrelevant to the situation.
MY personal property taxes have increased annually. That is part of home ownership.

Sorry wrong/right are not part of the equation.
As for the increase in property tax, often the county has not done proper re-evaluation in number years so it is a sticker shock to u.
What u can do is contest the increase, check local county web site for info and how to do it.
U can find companies that do it on contingent base. u pay 1/3-1/2 of what they save u when completed.
Now some of increase may have been insurance or not having paid enough to escrow, do check it out.
As for not enough income, younger sister needs to b a paying resident. 400$ month does sound reasonable. For rest of money do a budget learn to control ur money.
2nd jobs help also.

Hello zaque frost I would just like to inform everyone that I found a site that buyshouses or condos no matter the condition of the condo/house. I had several of my properties bought from them and they dont offer a redicliously low offer. They will offer you a good value. I actually made money on one of the properties I sold to them. This offer only applies to people that live in the USA so sorry to the overseas friends. Anyways heres the web address

that really sucks, they should not be able to increase people's taxes by that much. the first thing i would do is eleviate the increase in expenses due to your sister moving in. that should not cost you money, she should be paying rent or at the very least be covering the cost of them being there...re increased hydro, electricity, food etc.
you will have to check into government programs and see if there is some kind of help for you with your houseing costs. good luck

You can appeal, but with the county in bankruptcy, I doubt they will change it. Maybe you could refinance and not have your taxes included in the mortgage, then you could pay the taxes on your own, without the interest charged on the mortgage. We pay our own property taxes and my county allows you to make payments. Ask your sister to help, she is living with you now.

You can contest the tax assessment. That's about it. You could have your sister contribute something.
