How can I stop getting so mad at motorcyclists who don't wear helmets? Please help!?

Firstly, I honestly don't know WHY it pisses me off so much when motorcyclists don't wear helmets. It would take a psychologist who specializes in anger management to get to the root of why that is so. But here in New Mexico, motorcycles are very popular, especially since there's no helmet law for riders over 18. Plus, winter is pretty much over here (though I myself prefer a "real" winter...however, NM is begging for math teachers, my trade, so that's why I'm here). On the way home from church today, I noticed not one single motorcyclist wore a helmet. In the past, I used to flip them off and give them a "piece of my mind" for not wearing a helmet, but I've realized that NO amount of anger will get my point across to them...it's not like I'm going to change them. However, by not blowing up in anger at the cyclists, I came home all angry and couldn't concentrate on anything. It's like controlling my life!

Don't get me wrong - I like motorcycles, I love visiting motorcycle dealerships with my dad, and my dad himself has three motorcycles (but he ALWAYS wears a helmet, even in states that don't require it)! But still...how can I stop getting SOOO angry at motorcyclists who don't wear helmets? It's like they don't even care about their own well-being or something. I don't buy the argument that "A helmet gives them a false sense of security, so they ride safer without one." That's bull! I've noticed when they don't wear a helmet, some go out of their way to drive even MORE dangerously because they think they're SO invincible!

I would especially like to hear from bikers themselves...I don't care HOW rude you feel you need to be to me on Y!A; I'd rather you be rude to me online than me getting myself victimized on the streets by some other biker who wants to give ME a "piece of their mind."

Update:

No, I said I USED TO flip off motorcyclists who don't wear helmets. I've tried my best to break that bad habit, but once in a while, I still find myself doing it. Most of the time, I don't anymore.

Your a teacher? That's a scary thought.I'm glad my kids are out of school.I wouldn't want someone with anger issues like yours teaching them anything. You sound like one of those transplanted New Mexicans(i lived in New Mexico for 16 years) that move there because your fed up with where you lived. So you move and immediately try to start making it just like where you moved from. You should learn to mind your own business.I suggest you go get some mental help before we read about you in the paper. They also have some wonderful new drugs out for mental patients. You sound like you need a big dose of them.

So you aren't offended that a guy chooses to ride a bike in the first place, taking on a huge risk. But you are somehow personally offended that a guy then chooses to take on perhaps 20% additional risk by not wearing a helmet? A drunk driver pulls into the oncoming lane it will be the exact same outcome to a biker, helmet or no. A helmet is a good idea, it makes for a better ride, but it isn't magic, it is a plastic hardhat, it isn't a steel crash cage.

Maybe wear a helmet when flipping off bikers and see if it saves you from the risk you choose to take on when flipping off random strangers. Maybe there is some guy who gets pissed off when he sees someone flipping people off without a helmet. I think you should help that guy out and explain the reasons for not wearing a helmet when you flip people off.

You are asking about your anger issues, not necessarily my right to not wear a helmet. We are both adults. You need to realize that what doesn't hurt or interfere with you is really none of your business. What if I got pissed off because you go to a certain church? It is your right to choose which church you believe in, correct? If I sat outside your church parking lot and flipped people off you'd think I was a crazy idiot. (Be careful, certain bikers would find a way to prevent your insults.) Nothing, especially anger, should control your life. If you really cannot control your rage, you need to get some professional help. This is not a normal reaction to something not in your control and having not effect on you at all.

Quelle(n): Helmets are required in my state, but I'd wear one anyway.

I don't know why it pisses you off. If it because you think you are GOD?

You don't you learn the TRUTH: http://www.ncrider.com/Truth_About_Helmet_Laws_v1_...

    " Motorcycle Fatality Rates

Common sense would seem to dictate that of riders did not wear helmets then more riders would be killed, causing fatality rates to increase. This, however, is not exactly true according to recent evidence. States with no helmet laws actually have a fatality rate lower than that of states with mandatory helmet laws."

I have tried to tell people why I prefer no helmet. They tell me I am an idiot, a liar, etc.. On one large forum my posts were deleted and I was banned. So screw it! I have learned that people do *not* want the truth. Just as you will ignore the above cite.

I suggest you move to a mandatory helmet state. Then you wouldn't see anyone without a helmet and your problem wouldn't surface. I live in a no helmet law state and always ride without a helmet. That's the way I prefer to ride. I too go to church on Sunday but come home in a much better frame of mind than you do. Chill out there Rambo.

So here you are getting all fired up again, this time simply by writing about it. So you get your blood pressure up sky high, I'm sure your stomach hurts and I bet you don't sleep well. And the people you flip off? I'm sure they eat well, sleep just fine and a nice bike ride lowers their blood pressure. So who's the idiot here? You are.

You sound a lot like my dad was, worked up over things that didn't really matter. And he could go to town and everyone thought he was the happiest guy around but when he came home, he turned into a raving madman. I bet your fellow church goers think you're a really nice guy too but they don't know you're flipping people off on the way home. My dad's problem was clinical depression. After he finally got on the right meds, he was a completely different person, but that was after making my mother and us kids miserable for 30 years. Do you call your kids little SOBs or fat bastards like my dad did??? Maybe not, but I bet you still make those closest to you hate seeing you walk into the room because you drag a cloud of doom behind you. Do yourself and your family a favor and go see a psychiatrist. And no, you aren't crazy because it's caused by a brain chemical imbalance. You're only crazy if you don't go.

What if I said that based on what you've written that you are a typical stick worshiper who wants everyone to live by whatever diluted ideals you get from your magic Jewish history book about your stolen god, and that you fear anything you can't control?

Now that wouldn't be very nice now, would it. In fact, it could be said that something like that would be straight out mean and nasty and ridiculous and not the type of opinion that would keep the peace at all, right?

Understand that we can't please everyone and tolerance is vital to a free society.

And just to echo, Get Some Help before you really do yourself a mischief.

Quelle(n): I really like visiting family in New Mexico, there is so much to take in. It's a shame you seem to be missing so much beauty.

Y'know what REALLY pisses off the British .... Americans saying, "Do the math". IT'S MATHS .. PLURAL!

OK.. Got that off my chest.

You're living in a country of paradoxes. Far more religious than the rest of the Western World, yet the birth place of consumerism and the money culture. Home to archaic cultures such as the Mormons and Huttites, yet also where the glitz of Hollywood.

Biggest paradox is banning two strokes in the 70s, yet you can ride bare bonce in the 21st century.

Just enjoy the climate, cheap petrol and huge burgers and chill out. And stop hassling me (man)

    You got issues

I ride, I wear a helmet but laws here dictate that I must

    but it's also my choice

I don't think teaching is your best choice of careers because your fixing to find your exhaust pipe plugged if you flip off the wrong person
