What effect does a nipple piercing have on breast feeding?

You should be able to breast feed just fine unless the piercing tears a nerve. You will have to take the piercing out for the baby to nurse though.

After my niece was born, I had met a woman in the hospital who was having a really hard time with breastfeeding because she had one of her nipples pierced. The doctor felt that there was scar tissue there preventing the milk/colostrum from being expressed. I don't know what became of her because my sister was discharged the next day. I know the nurses were rushing about with the lactation specialists trying to get the baby to latch onto that breast and the baby would try and become frustrated. I met her in the nursery - I went to get my sister's baby because they took her to draw blood and were gone forever.

This was only one person and it may have been the way that her piercing was done. I am not sure - but it's definitely something I would discuss with your doctor.

So, talk to your doctor, do your research about breastfeeding now, and from there try it if you can.

If your piercing is not done correctly it can cause complications with blocked milk ducts. Even if the piercing is done correctly there is also the chance the body will reject the piercing, damaged tissue may also cause problems.However, if all goes well the piercing must be taken out before nursing.
