How do you explain a secular Christmas?

My oldest will be a month shy of 4 years old this Christmas and this year, he really knows what is happening. However, I'm struggling to explain a secular christmas in a way he can understand. He spends time with family already so telling him it's about being with family just doesn't seem to sink in! I just don't want him to think it's all about presents.

It was a winter celebration shared by Nordic people and other Pagans.



And, contrary to whatever you say, Christmas IS all about presents.

If the holiday of Christmas is based on the ancient northern traditions of people coming together in the dead of winter to exchange their meager food and other supplies with each other, to get something they're lacking, for something they have in abundance, to last them all until the spring, for the sake of the survival of the entire community as a viable unit, then I think the only gifts we give should have a similar quality: A real Christmas gift must be something only we personally can provide.
