Hijacked VCR distribution channels?
One of my professors told me about a company from Japan that partnered with a company in the United States to sell VCRs. The Japanese company (maybe Sony) made the VCRs and the American company sold them under their name. The story is that once the VCRs had an established market, the Japanese company went to the American company's distributors and cut deals directly with them, leaving the American company out of the loop. Try as I may, I cannot find any information to substatiate this. Does anybody know anything about this?

Unless your Professor can come up with real company names, then the story is apocryphal. It doesn't have to be a true story in order to illustrate the concept, but it would lend credence if there were documentation. I don't know the particular story, but I have been exposed to the concept in Business School.. If I were you, I'd look at Hitachi and JVC as opposed to Sony. JVC & Hitachi were OEM's for lots of U.S. VCR brands. Sony, much less so because Sony was already more of an established brand name in the US during the VCR years. Certainly, if you were using this as an example in a paper or presentation in class, your professor would insist on reliable sources and names. You should hold your professor to the same standard.
