if cops want in my home can i call 911 to verify their are legit?

before they come in? like say 2 people not dressed as cops , but there are 2 behind them dressed as cops?

thank you i had heard of this going on and was a bit worried.

thing is if someone is busting into your home that would be an emergency, so why would that get me in trouble for calling 911

Update 3:

if they had a warrent thats fine ,and id stand where they could see me when i use the phone,i keep it at hand at all times.

    911 is for emergencies. Know the number to your local police station and call there directly to verify. Request department identification for whoever is at your door. If there were two people dressed in uniform and you see a marked police car behind them, chances are it's not an elaborate scam to kidnap you.

    Certainly. Just tell the ones outside you are doing so. Same as you may call 911 to verify an officer is trying to pull you over. Especially if there has been a rash of fakers.

    You case brings one thing up. The real cops will wait for you to call. Fake ones won't.

    You should listen to Mad Monk. If you delay in opening the door, the door may be forced. It depends on the circumstances but if the police come with a search warrant signed by a judge, knocking and announcing their intent to come in is just an opportunity for you to open the door so it isn't broken down.

    In all likelihood, if the police come knocking on your door with a search warrant, you probably know why. It is very rare, but well publicized when it happens, that the police serve a search warrant on a house that isn't involved in criminal activity. So if they come knocking and you try to use the excuse that you wanted to verify they are the police by calling 911 before opening the door, not many people are going to buy it.

    If the officer's believe that they have a warrant to enter into your home, they do not need your permission. That warrant gives them the power to enter your home even if you are not there. You can call to verify, but you will not be able to stop them.

    A warrant is an order by a Judge to enter your home. Your calling the police will not be enough to stop a court order unfortunately.

    If you ask them to wait because you need time to call police, they may suspect that you are destroying evidence and enter anyway.

    No, 911 is for emergencies. Call the non-emergency line. If you call 911 that would just give them permission to go in (if they're real), for calling 911 without an emergency.

    Of course you can.

    When I worked plain clothes I often suggested it.

    But if in full uniform with a real police car in front of your house I would not worry.
