Do you like the name Basil for a boy or girl?

I found this a bit amusing since my son's name is Basil, Basil Matthias. I loved it, I named him after Basil Rathbone, an actor that use to play Sherlock Holmes in the old black and white films.

I think that is like calling a girl Oscar or Edward. It is a boys name, and calling girls that is not fair to the kid I think. I hope you are being funny or haven't heard of the name before. Look up Fawlty Towers the British TV Show - Basil Fawlty is what Basil would remind some people of, not just a herb. Basia is a girls name if you like the sound of it. Good luck.

- The word basil comes from the Greek 'basileus', meaning "king".

- Basil as I'm sure you are aware is the name of a herb that grows naturally and has been used in medicine and cookery for thousands of years.

- In old English and still in some places in the UK it is know as 'Saint Joseph's Wort'.

- It's native to India and areas in Asia.

I don't really like it as a name, but I'd definitely say a boy. When I hear it I think of Basil Brush, the fox puppet (you might not have heard of him if you're not from the UK). And a really lazy horse at my riding school.

I think Basil would be better for a girl ;)
