what is an evac and recharge?
I had a licensed mechanic perform an evac and recharge on my car's A/C. I think they screwed up because now my compressor's clutch is burned out. When I heard "evac and recharge," I would think that they would pull out the freon plus the oil and dye, then refill with new freon, oil, and dye. Is my assumption valid?
They said that they added oil and dye when there was already oil and dye in the system, and that the system now had too much oil. The tech said that there is a high likelihood that the clutch would burn out because it would need to spin a compressor that had too much oil in it.
My question is that if they did a proper evac, why wouldn't the shop be able to know how much oil to put back in to the system? I am blaming them because they knowingly over-filled the oil and dye and refuse to take responsibility for the resultant failure. It is almost as though they did not evac; they just simply stuffed it too full of new oil and freon.

when the system is evacuated (recovered) it does remove some of the system oil. some oil should be added when the system is refilled. the compressor clutch is separate from the rest of the ac system and does not use any oil to tube the clutch bearing. as for the clutch failure, it could be just a coincidence, could have been weak to begin with, or if the compressor was harder to turn because of the low oil level in the ac system causing more friction. the compressor would have to be removed and the oil drained and measured to prove anything.

The only way they could have damaged the clutch is if they overfilled the system and it locked up the compressor. Even then, that would have damaged the belt first as it spun around a locked pulley. Very far fetched to think they could have caused the damage.
