Am I required to keep my gun in a safe or locked with a trigger lock while in my house (CA)?

Question

I know that in California, I need to have a safe suitable for weapon storage in my house or a trigger lock for each weapon I purchase - I need to prove that I possess one of those whenever I want to buy a gun.

But do I need to actually keep my gun inside the safe or locked with a trigger lock? Keeping my gun locked up would deny me the ability to react quickly to a home invasion or other unlawful entry on my property.

You may be guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony if you keep a loaded firearm within any premises that are under your custody or control and a child under 18 years of age obtains and uses it, resulting in injury or death, or carries it to a public place, unless you stored the firearm in a locked container or locked the firearm with a locking device to temporarily keep it from functioning.

The law is written as to make illegal having a gun where a child could get it. So, if you have no children in your house or never have the visit you should be OK.

But there have been cases in California where the gun owner was charged with the violation when a minor has broken in to their home an stolen a handgun that was not locked up.

The current wisdom is to keep it locked up when you aren't at home.

ususally depends on the gun if it is a pistol you use for saftey it should be fine on trigger lock but if it is a rifle you use for hunting keep it in a safe so u should be fine if you use it for saftey and it is on trigger lock
