My dog has been acting unusual. This could be signs of?
She's reaching near 12 years old. For the past month, she barely eats her food. Sometimes, I'd have to hand feed her in order for her to consider eating. She doesn't like her usual dog food we give her and sometimes, I look at her bowl and she won't take a bite. Out of desperation, I'll boil rice and she'll eat a lil bit of that. Last year, she had a hard time jumping on the couch and now she just looks at me to lift her up onto it. She's sleeping more often and I always find her in the most awkward places in the house. Places that she never really stays at I.E the front door mat of our house or she'll try to distance herself from everybody.
Last time I took her to the vet, she had similar symptoms but the vet checked her out and said that she wasn't feeling good so we gave her some medicine and things seemed to clear up. However, I honestly don't have the money to take her back to the vet and I want to make her feel as comfortable as possible. This could be signs of her passing soon?
I have given her soft food for sometime now. She likes it. However, she takes little nibbles of it out of her bowl. It pains me to watch her eat that way so I usually end up hand feeding her. Again, I'd take her to the vet but it's too costly for me right now and I don't have enough money to get her treated for anything else. The best thing I could do is try to comfort her as much as I could and to get something in her tummy. Thanks for all the advice guys/girls.

These are not necessarily signs of passing, but are definitely signs of aging. When my senior dog started these symptoms, my vet did prescribe Rimadyl for her and it worked wonders for her. You do have to monitor the bloodwork and make sure the medication is not doing more harm than good..but it was the right choice for my little dog. She started it when she was around 14 and was on it for 2 years before mental issues overrode the physical, and we did PTS.
Yours is an old girl and deserves to be comfortable in her senior years. Please take her to the vet and get her checked. It is possible it is aging, but yes, it could be a disease process. At this age, if it is a disease, you may decide to either PTS or let nature take its course. Either way, some meds would be appropriate.
After 12 years, I hope you will respect and honor her by taking her to the vet and finding out at the very least where things are, and where they might go so that you can make a decision regarding her care...even if that decision is euthanasia.
Good luck to you...I hope she just needs a little medication to be comfortable.

Your vet said "she wasnt feeling good" that is quite the random diagnoses. Having to guess I would say that , yes, she could be nearing the end. What kind of medicine did your vet prescribe? All of her symptoms do point to her being at the end of her time. If it were my dog, I would find a way to get her back to the doctor and have a canine geriatric blood panel done. It could be liver failure, kidney failure, or even cancer. No way to know with out blood work and a complete exam. I know that finances are a problem for alot of people...try asking your vet about care credit or a payment plan that could fit your budget. At least with an accurate diagnoses ( even if you cant afford thousands of dollars in treatment) at least you would know what you are dealing with and can medicate her accordingly.
Until then, you can try some canned diet. Try the really cheap smelly kind. They seem to prefer it and at her age, it wont do any harm. You can also try boiling some ground beef or chicken and mixing that with the rice. It may get her to eat. Not being able to get around so well is a sure sign that she is in some level of pain. You can give her coated aspirin, ( such as ascriptin or bayer...DO NOT use tylenol, motrin etc) Call your vet and ask for an appropriate dose. The goal now is to keep her as comfortable as possible until you can get a definitive diagnoses.
Im really sorry that your fur kid is not feeling well. Good luck to you and her.

this is how my dog was in the last few months of her life. she was 12 too. try getting minced meat to cook with the rice and make it more appealing, or just give her what you're cooking for yourself. my old girl refused to eat anything for nearly a week even when i offered her mcdonalds cheese burgers! then i plopped down a bowl of the chicken and bacon rissotto that i'd cooked for the rest of the family and she scoffed it so fast i thought she'd forgotten what food was.
it may also be a symptom of pain, as dogs are pack animals they won't show when they're in pain all the time as its a sign of weakness. arthritis and other age related problem can make them feel sore and that in turn makes them not eat and not be able to get around as normal.
i hope you have lots of time left with your doggy but also i hope you know when its time to let go.

Sadly this does sound as if she is ready to pass, she seems to be giving up on things. The best thing to do for her now is to make her as comfortable as possible and love on her. As far as the food goes, try seeing if she will eat some soft dog food, hard dog food may be too hard on her teeth.

She is in pain. Pain will cause a dog not to eat, find other places to lie down because they are extremely uncomfortable.
When you are in pain do you want to eat? I am not trying to compare human to dog but it is very obvious to me what the problem is.
She may also have other things going on and a Senior Wellness Exam from your vet will tell you. That means blood work, ex-rays etc.
There is pain medication your vet can prescribe.
She may be getting ready to die simply because she is in so much pain. Do you understand you can help with this by taking her to the vet?
Or do you just want to leave it be and let her slowly die a painful death? Really. I am just bringing it right to the table with no bull crap.
If you cannot afford to have her vetted & pain medication then I suggest you find enough money to have her euthanized to relieve her of this pain.
Letting a dog die on it's own in pain is NOT something I agree with. Make up your mind. But do NOT let her suffer!

To be completely honest, that's what it sounds like to me. Our 15 yr old dalmatian slowed down on eating, and got really lethargic, too. We also found him in places in the house that he normally wouldn't stay. Another sign to look out for is loss of control when it comes to the bathroom.
Passing is what it sounds like, but you can always hope for the best.
Keep her comfortable.

What breed? I had a Lab quit eating at 12 years old. The vet fixed her up and we had another good 3 years.

Has her teeth been checked? Has blood work ever been done. Healthy dogs do not deliberately starve themselves. She still could live for years with these behaviors and conditions. So whether you have her diagnosed/treated, euthanize her or let her live her natural life is your decision. However ask yourself if she is enjoying life being the way that she is. There is a difference in quality of life and quantity of life.

she probably can't chew the food because of her senior teeth. Soften her food with chicken broth or something.
