Why are translators taken for granted in this forum?

Some in this forum work as translators, that's how they pay their rent, pay their car payment, and buy food, they give specific answers, yet even when they are selected as the "Best Answer" all they may get is a "tx". Years of experience and skills deserve more than that. Show gratitude, and say a little more than two letters. Others who ask don't even bother to select an answer, is chosen by voters!

Update:

Annely, Knownbaby, Tailer, and Karl, you DO understand what it entails, it' not the literal translation that any computer can do. It's the nuances, awareness of the period in time, the cultural background, the idioms, regionalisms, etc. which we take into account. But by the number of responses we can clearly see not many care about this subject.

Update 2:

I wish I could select all of you but I am forced to choose one, Annely, she describes a little more what it entails, but I sincerely thank ALL of you, we all think alike.

Like a previous post has already mentioned, many people don't realize how much work translating really is. They don't know how much we rack our brains for the right nuance, the right word, the right phrasing, the right explanation. It can be quite difficult trying to take something that comes so naturally to you, then explain it in a way that is easily understandable for someone who isn't familiar with how you think or speak.

And don't feel bad for getting a "tx". I once just got a period. Seriously, the user just wrote a dot in the comments section after choosing my answer as BA. I don't mind it so much, but I think we can all use a little bit of appreciation every once in a while.

I admit it bothers me at times to get a lame response, but not as much as those who don't even select a best answer. Talk about de-motivational. Honestly, though, the best thing to do is remember those who never select a best answer and just never respond to their posts again. If we all did that they'd eventually have to start choosing best answers, otherwise they won't get any. I don't bother with those I know won't even give me credit for my effort. Translating isn't rocket science, I know, but it does require a lot of effort, especially for those who ask for full explanations of things. I used to be TC, but then I got sick of the lack of credit and stopped for a while. Now, despite my hard efforts, I'm back to seeming less credible, when in fact I think I contribute quite a bit. Oh well, what can you do? As a translator I know the pain in the butt it can be, so don't worry, at least we can appreciate each other's effort since we go through it ourselves.

No te preocupes, amigo, que aún hay un montón de gente que sí agradece lo que hacemos :)

A lot of people don't realize how much work it takes to be a translator. They think that all it takes is being bilingual. I used to think this way too until I took translation in college, and learned that there is so much more.

Nobody on Y!A receives payments for their answers, unless they work outside of the website. They'd have to work with an individual, school, or company. Most people you get answers from are people who know the language, either from studying it or being native to the country where the language originated from.
